Bandwidth Calculator

Calculate estimated transfer time for a file based on connection speed.

Note: Internet speeds are usually in bits (Mbps), while files are in bytes (MB). 1 Byte = 8 bits.

How to Calculate Download Time

To calculate download time, you must convert the file size and internet speed into the same unit (usually bits).

Time = File Size / Internet Speed

Bits vs Bytes

Most internet service providers (ISPs) advertise speeds in Megabits per second (Mbps). However, file sizes are measured in Megabytes (MB).

  • 1 Byte = 8 Bits
  • 1 MB = 8 Megabits (Mb)

So, a 100 Mbps connection can download at max 12.5 MB/s (100 / 8).

Common Transfer Times (10GB File)

  • 10 Mbps (Basic DSL): ~2 Hours 13 Min
  • 100 Mbps (Standard Cable): ~13 Minutes
  • 1 Gbps (Fiber): ~1 Minute 20 Seconds
