Significant Figures Calculator
Count significant figures or solve equations using sig fig rules.
Rules for Significant Figures
Significant figures (sig figs) are digits that carry meaningful information about the precision of a measurement.
Counting Rules
- Non-zero digits are always significant. (e.g., 22 has 2)
- Any zeros between two significant digits are significant. (e.g., 202 has 3)
- Trailing zeros in the decimal portion ONLY are significant. (e.g., 0.50 has 2, but 0.5 has 1)
- Leading zeros are NEVER significant. (e.g., 0.004 has 1)
Result Rules
- Multiplication/Division: The result should have the same number of sig figs as the value with the least significant figures used in the calculation.
- Addition/Subtraction: The result should have the same number of decimal places as the value with the least decimal places.
