For a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0, the values of x (the roots) can be found using:

x = [-b ± √(b² - 4ac)] / 2a

The Discriminant

The term inside the square root, b² - 4ac, is called the discriminant.

  • positive: Two real solutions.
  • zero: One real solution.
  • negative: Two complex (imaginary) solutions.
