Mean Median Mode Range

Calculate the measures of central tendency for a data set.

Central Tendency Definitions

  • Mean: The arithmetic average used by adding all numbers and dividing by the count.
  • Median: The middle number when the list is sorted. If there is an even number of values, it is the average of the two middle numbers.
  • Mode: The number(s) that appear most frequently. A set can have one mode, multiple modes, or no mode.
  • Range: The difference between the largest and smallest value.

Example

Set: {2, 5, 9, 3, 5, 4}

Sorted: {2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 9}

  • Mean = 28 / 6 = 4.66
  • Median = (4+5)/2 = 4.5
  • Mode = 5
