BMR Calculator

Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - the number of calories your body needs to function at rest.

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns while performing basic life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. Even if you stayed in bed all day, your body would burn roughly this many calories.

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate standard for BMR calculation:

  • Men: (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
  • Women: (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161

BMR vs TDEE

BMR is just your "coma calories." To find out how much you actually burn in a day, you need to calculate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which accounts for your BMR plus your physical activity level.

How to Use BMR for Weight Loss

To lose weight, you generally need to consume fewer calories than your TDEE (not just your BMR). Eating below your BMR is usually not recommended as it can slow down your metabolism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does muscle affect BMR?

Yes. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. Increasing muscle mass will increase your BMR.

Does BMR decrease with age?

Yes, metabolism naturally slows down as you age, partly due to loss of muscle mass.
