How is Electricity Cost Calculated?

The cost to run an electrical appliance is calculated using the formula:

Cost = (Power in Watts × Time in Hours) / 1000 × Cost per kWh

What is a kWh?

kWh (Kilowatt-hour) is the unit of energy used for billing electricity. 1 kWh equals using 1,000 Watts of power for 1 hour. For example, running a 1,000-Watt Space Heater for 1 hour uses exactly 1 kWh.

Typical Power Consumption Examples

  • Ceiling Fan: 60-70 Watts ($0.01/hour)
  • Phone Charger: 5-10 Watts (negligible)
  • Washing Machine: 500-1000 Watts ($0.08-$0.16/hour)
  • Electric Oven: 2000-5000 Watts ($0.32-$0.80/hour)
