How is Flight Time Calculated?

Flight duration is calculated by dividing the Great Circle Distance (the shortest path between two points on a sphere) by the aircraft's average cruising speed.

Common Flight Speeds

  • Commercial Airliner: 800-900 km/h (500-560 mph)
  • Private Jet: 700-900 km/h (430-560 mph)
  • Single Engine Prop: 200-250 km/h (120-155 mph)

Real vs. Estimated Time

Actual flight times vary due to:

  • Wind Speeds: Tailwinds can shorten flights, headwinds lengthen them.
  • Air Traffic Control: Holding patterns or routing changes.
  • Taxi Time: Time spent on the runway (added in our buffer option).
